Once upon a time
In the year 1519, a lumberjack by the name of Jean de
la Baume witnessed the apparition of the Virgin Mary who
requested that he built a chapel at the place of her apparition.
Mary promised her blessings to him and to those who come
to worship there.
The first stone was laid that very year.
In the year 1521, Pope Leon X endorsed the miracles produced
there.
In the year 1637, King Louis XIII and Queen Anne of Austria
sent an emissary: Father Fiacre to pray in Cotignac in
the hope that they would be graced with the dauphin they
had been awaiting for 22 years.
On the 5th of September 1637Louis XIV the future king
was born. Ever since that day Louis XIII dedicated his
kingdom to Mary and declared August 15 a national holiday
: Assumption.
To show his gratitude to the Virgin Mary, and to present
his wife Marie-Thérèse, the Sun King came
to worship at Cotignac with his mother Anne of Austria
and Mazarin onthe 21st February 1660…
